January Newsletter

Dear 17th District Neighbors:
Happy New Year! I hope 2020 brings you and your families good health, happiness, and prosperity.
As we kick-off this new decade, it’s time for planning and resolutions.
The General Assembly is scheduled to return to Springfield for the 2020 Spring Legislative Session on Tuesday, January 28th. I have been busy working on my legislative priorities for this session, and I expect to introduce new legislation that reflects the concerns and ideas expressed by many of you, including a focus on protecting our environment, strengthening access to our justice system, cracking down on price-gouging in the insurance industry and supporting small business growth.
In order to ensure that my office is as accessible as possible to my constituents, our office is planning a series of community office hours at different locations throughout the 17th District each month. Next month, find us on February 3rd at the Skokie Public Library from 4:00-6:00 pm to assist you with your State government questions. We encourage you to stop by and bring your questions. Follow me on Facebook at @GongGershowitz for additional dates and places around the district.
As always, should you need assistance from our office, please contact us at 847-486-8810 or email us at info@gonggershowitz.com . My staff is available at our Glenview office during weekday business hours to help with constituent services.
Warmest Regards,
Jennifer
Representative Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz

2020 Lunar New Year

2020 Lunar New Year begins January 25th, the second new moon after the winter solstice. Lunar New Year is the most important holiday of the year for many Asian communities around the world. It is known at Tet in Vietnam and the Spring Festival in China and elsewhere. The Lunar New Year is filled with symbolic meaning. In communities across the United States, people hang decorations with the auspicious colors of red and gold, and celebrate to welcome the new year with a fresh start.

Each year is represented by an animal that appears in the 12-year zodiac calendar. On January 24, 2020 we will transition from the Year of Pig to the Year of Rat, which is the first animal in the zodiac. This calendar transition will last until the 2021 Lunar New Year’s Eve on February 11. In honor of this Lunar New Year celebration many events are being held around Chicagoland, including one that I am co-hosting with Senators Laura Fine and Ram Villivalam as well as MWRD Commissioner Josina Morita. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Niles Township Food Pantry.

2nd Annual Lunar New Year Celebration

On Sunday, January 19th, we invite you to the 2nd Annual Asian New Year Fundraiser to benefit the Niles Township Food Pantry from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Oakton Community Center to celebrate the Year of the Rat and support our local families in need across Skokie, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove and Niles. Enjoy food from over a dozen local Asian restaurants, performances from local organizations and bring your kids for fun crafts and lion dancers. Tickets are $10 per person and $20 per family. We will also be collecting toilet paper and diapers–an essential that families cannot buy with EBT Cards. Event info, or to buy tickets, visit: http://bit.ly/JosinaLunarNewYear2020 . Additional New Years events can be found on our community calendar.
We hope to see you there!
